Our testing protocol
Every operator we rank is tested against the same protocol over a minimum 90-day window. The protocol:
Day 1 — Account setup
- Register with a fresh phone number, complete identity verification.
- Document the registration flow: required fields, verification time, friction points.
- Make initial deposit of KSh 5,000 via M-Pesa. Time the deposit.
- Claim welcome bonus if applicable; document credit time and terms.
Days 1–30 — Active play
- Place at least 50 bets across sports and casino products.
- Stake mix designed to clear any wagering requirement on the welcome bonus.
- Document every payment-related friction (failed deposits, hold queries, KYC requests).
- Test customer support twice — once during peak (Saturday 8–10pm), once off-peak.
Days 30–90 — Withdrawal testing
- Conduct at least six withdrawals of varying sizes (KSh 500 to KSh 20,000).
- Time each withdrawal from initiation to M-Pesa SMS.
- Spread withdrawals across days of the week and times of day.
- Test at least one Airtel Money withdrawal where supported.
Day 90 — Scoring and write-up
- Calculate average withdrawal time, fastest, slowest.
- Score across all six categories with documented evidence.
- Apply weights, derive headline rating.
- Cross-check against player reviews and regulatory records.
How weights translate to scores
Each category is scored from 0 to 10. The weighted average is then converted to our 5-star headline rating using the formula:
Headline rating = (Σ category_score × category_weight) ÷ 2
So an operator that scores a perfect 10 across every category receives 5.0/5. A more typical strong operator might score 9 on licensing, 8 on payments, 8 on product, 7 on bonus, 8 on mobile, 9 on support — yielding a weighted average of 8.0, which becomes 4.0/5.
What we deliberately don't weight
Some factors we do not include in our scoring, despite seeing them in other rankings:
- Brand recognition. A recognised brand isn't necessarily a better operator. Several smaller, less-marketed sites pay out faster than household names.
- Headline bonus size alone. Bonus size without context (wagering, validity, exclusions) is misleading. We use effective wagering instead.
- Operator-supplied statistics. If a site claims "fastest payouts in Kenya" we don't take that on faith. We test it.
- Affiliate commission rates. The size of an operator's affiliate offer to us has no influence on the ranking.
Re-evaluation cycle
Operators are re-tested quarterly. The full top-eight ranking is re-published every three months with updated withdrawal times, current bonus terms, and any material changes to product or regulation. Older review pages are dated and updated rather than left to drift.
Rankings can move materially between quarters. Our Q4 2025 ranking had Betika at #1 — they moved to #2 in Q2 2026 after withdrawal times lengthened. We'd rather move an operator down based on our own testing than maintain a ranking for consistency.
Editorial independence and the affiliate question
BetSmart Kenya earns commission when readers register at the operators we recommend. The simplest way to think about whether this compromises us: if our editorial team rated a site poorly, would the affiliate manager push to revise the score? The answer at our publication is no — editorial scoring is final and is not shown to commercial staff before publication.
We disclose the commercial relationship clearly on every page. We've turned away two operators in the last 12 months whose payment reliability did not meet our threshold, despite competitive commission offers. The system isn't perfect — every affiliate site faces the same tension — but transparency about it is the best we can offer.
Reader feedback
Player experiences are the strongest signal we don't get from internal testing. If you've had a different experience with an operator we've ranked — particularly around withdrawal delays, account closures, or bonus disputes — please email editorial@betsmart.co.ke. We aggregate reader feedback into the next quarter's review cycle.
